About 20 years ago Gretchen Bataille (pictured) w
as faced with being a widow and a mother of two teenagers. Most of us would have screamed, “Calf rope,” and headed to our folks or a welfare service. Not Gretchen. She rolled up her sleeves and raised two great kids (Erin Hettinga Crail and Marc Hettinga) and now not only has three adorable grandkiddos (one of whom is a less-than-a-year granddaughter), she is also the proud president of the University of North Texas.
While it’s a long, long time before Gretchen will have time to give fulltime attention to the grandyoungsters, last night she was celebrating the unveiling of the model of UNT’s new Business Leadership Building at the Nasher Sculpture Center. The building is designed “to provide UNT’s more than 5,600 business majors with the highest level of academic instruction and professional training.”
Why do we suspect that Ms. Gretchen has more plans up her fashionable sleeves for the university in Denton-land? Carole McClellan Rylander Keeton Strayhorn, move over. North Texas has its own tough grandmother and she’s a pistol.
