After planting trees on Arbor Day (Friday), we’re committing our entire weekend to a muchly-feared, annual challenge — spring cleaning of the “scary closets.”
What’s a scary closet? It’s a closet that you’ve avoided like a bill collector. There are things in that closet that you just don’t to face and admit that you haven’t used in ages or you’ve found a nifty replacement. But we’ve got to gut up and let go of the stuff because someone else can use it.
This year we’re dividing up our closet finds into two categories. One group will destined for the curb and the other will be for the May 1st “Trinkets and Treasures Rummage Sale” organized by the Junior League of Dallas.
They’ll be accepting donations at Armoires & More on the following dates: (more…)
Capriccio Ristorante may sound a bit Italian, but tomorrow it’s as Irish as the blarney stone. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Alpha Road restaurant is partnering up with The Irish American Society to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and help area children in need of homes.
Just bring a gently-used- or new-child’s clothing or toys to Capriccio and you’ll get a ticket into the restaurant’s celebration/fund raiser benefiting Captain Hope’s Kids. Once inside you’ll have “complimentary bites, drink specials, and live music by the Very Verys.”
If you had no money and had lost several teeth due to drug abuse, what would you do? Wednesday some of Dallas most caring and supportive women and men could hardly believe their ears when they heard what one woman did. But first, let’s set the stage.
The annual Attitudes & Attire covered the full range of emotions today at the Dallas Trade Mart. Ranging from the runway antics of playful models wearing delicious
clothes designed by Paulette Martsolf (pictured) of Allie-Coosh to the heart rendering stories from beneficiaries of the A&A program, the room of ladies and gents had a memorable time.
Surprise highlight was Ebby Halliday Acers, who donated one of her suits to A&A, and then pulled out her ukulele to sing a tribute to honoree Caroline Rose Hunt. At one point, Ebby kept strumming and stopped singing trying to recall the lyrics. Then the nearly 99-year old smiled and said, still strumming, “I’m showing my age.” She brought the house down.
As hard as it was to follow up that act, A&A Executive Director Lyn Berman started the presentation of the Kim Dawson Attitude Award by introducing
Laurie Harrison and her mother Caroline Rose Hunt (pictured with Laurie). It was Laurie’s task to introduce her mother. It was a marvelously rich and strong introduction filled with a daughter’s love and admiration. So much so that Caroline hesitated to receive her award. “I didn’t know what Laurie was going to say,” as she teared up. Capturing the mother-daughter exchange was
Caroline’s granddaughter/Laurie’s daughter Hassie Harrison (pictured) with her trusty iPhone. What a cutie! (more…)
You’ve cleaned up all the gift wrap and you’re just not ready to tackle writing thank you notes quite yet. And let’s be honest — you’re shopped out even with the post-Christmas sales. So, why not tackle your closet? You probably got some new clothes that need space in your closet and there are some old clothes in there that you haven’t worn in years. Now, be honest. It has been years, hasn’t it? In fact, you probably avoid them like bill collectors because they’re a size too wrong.
So, why not clean out your closet, make room for the new items, and send your old threads to someone who could really use them?
Plus, if you do it before New Year’s, you might just make your accountant or the charitable contribution in Quicken very happy.
